| Main features |
| Each map consists of
9 layers or main planes. The layers surimposing order,
fonts and colors may be changed according to User's choice. |
| 1-pays: coloured
polygons representing the countries. Dependent
countries are drawn in the same color as the main state but bear a
smaller surface with a specific shade. The User has to redraw
shadings by himself if needed.
|
| 2-rivers: lines
representing the main water courses. With the exception of a few
details (Suez Canal, for
example), this layer is the same for all maps.
|
| 3-oceans:
drawing of sea and lake surfaces, i.e., of coasts, in 6 main vector
objects. The colour of the lakes or of the North Sea can be
changed without touching the Mediterranean. This layer is
relatively homogeneous regardless of the century considered, but there
are four main forms: 1 - 700, 800 - 1400,
and 1500 - 1900. The 2000 layer has additional artificial land and
lakes.
|
| 4-villes:
small circles with names in 1-point Arial font mark the sites
of the main cities of each century. The names, in local language, vary,
going from Latin to Medieval and modern languages. There are about 1000
names for ancient maps. This number increases progressively to
2550 for the year 2000. As font coding may cause complex issues,
an additional layer named "4b-villes vect"
includes all names as vectorized fonts. This layer may be
suppressed if the main layer displays text properly.
|
| 5-provinces:
polygonal lines for internal administrative borders of main
countries and major administrative divisions like regions or dioceses.
|
| 6-frontieres:
polygonal lines for the countries borders.
|
| 7-names or 7-noms or 7-nomines: names of countries,
divisions and subdivisions or peoples.
There are about 150 place names for ancient maps, and the number
increases to 1070 for year 2000. Text is in
Latin up until year 500, and in French or English for
the following centuries. Fonts used are TimesNewRoman but, as font
coding may
cause problems, 2 additional layers, "7b-noms vect",
"7b-names vect" or "7b-nomines vect", are including all names as
vectorized fonts. These layers may be suppressed if the display of the
the main layer is correct.
|
| 8-coord: latitude
and
longitude lines with an increment of 5.
|
| 9-coord2: work
layer
offering latitudes and longitudes, with a precision
of half a degree. All maps
are provided as zip files in both Corel Draw 10 and Adobe illustrator 8
formats. The Corel
Draw 10 zip files are weighting 3.09 MB to 11.6 MB and the Adobe
Illustrator 10 zip files are weighting 2.26 MB to 8.7 MB for map 2000.
The final files will be lighter when the additional layers with
vectorized
text will be removed.
